About

Norton Signs is a traditional signwriting business established in 1960 as a family-run craft.

Based in Derbyshire and working with clients across the UK, the business specialises in hand-painted signwriting and bespoke design.

Originally founded by Mike Norton, the business is now led by his daughter Claire Norton, who took over in 2016 and continues to uphold its heritage and craftsmanship.

Heritage & Craft

Having learned directly from her father, Claire continues to refine the traditional skills passed down through generations. She is particularly recognised for her work in narrowboat signwriting and traditional canal art, where authenticity and attention to detail are central to every commission.

Each piece is approached with care and precision, ensuring the finished work reflects both the clientโ€™s vision and the integrity of the craft.

Bespoke Service

Claire provides a fully bespoke service, guiding each project from initial concept through to completion. Known for her thoughtful design input and meticulous attention to detail, she creates work that is both visually distinctive and rooted in traditional techniques.

Her commissions include gold leaf and gilding, vehicle lettering, fascia boards, honour boards, and a wide range of hand-painted signage projects.

Materials & Approach

Norton Signs uses only high-quality paints and materials to ensure durability and a professional finish across all work.

In contrast to mass-produced printed signage, traditional signwriting offers something enduring and individualโ€”combining artistry, craftsmanship, and longevity. Each piece is designed to stand out, both visually and in character.
